Reason for studios to care about either is $$$.
For established IPs, seems like critics' opinions don't matter much.

I like to think that if you mess instalment n up, n+1 is going to do poorly in the box office. As we’re seeing with RoS.

And TLJ => Solo. I saw it pointed out that both Rogue One and Solo are about the same in quality, but have different $$$ brought in.

Noooo. Rogue One, in my book, is the best new Star Wars film. Head and shoulders above everything else made in the last decade.

RO doesn't "feel" like any of the main Star Wars movies to me.
I did like the raid they do to exfil the old scientist guy, then the X-wings etc.
But, yeah, TFA "too safe" & TLJ "too not-safe".
