the paranoia that led to said success is then removed for a new competitor to creep up unnoticed to challenge the now-incumbent.
isn’t this the inevitable cycle of all market-based environments?

Not true of high achievers & always true, regardless of how good/bad circumstances are, of average ones. But it is deeper than this. Everyone is a high achiever in an area they are passionate about so if you see average achievers, it is far more likely due to the job than them
