I have friends who scoff at other friends, ones who have had odd starts or dead ends early in their careers.
I think they’re wrong. Early careers nearly always look weird and odd. Things pick up in one’s 30s and 40s.
I think one should discount what one sees in the 20s.

I have to periodically remind myself that the peak of a typical career today is in one's 50s or 60s. Career thinking is difficult because of individual variance + luck, but also because you're aiming for something that's usually three decades away.
