Good ol' "will it embarrass or cost money?" for motivation. But for "search for truth", seems like nonfic authors don't play the same game as the (presumably slower) universities.

Interesting that "controversial = need to double check" means that controversial book has higher standard of reliability than uncontroversial book, though, from publishers doing this.
