A really simple way to deal with the debate on 'external memory aids' and 'deep work':
Human long term memory consists of procedural knowledge and descriptive knowledge. Two different systems. Two different approaches. Both valid.

Hm not quite. I support external memory aids, and I support the work is doing. I also recognize a difference in declarative and procedural knowledge. Rather my point is that a non-trivial amount of both must be in mind in order to participate in reasoning.

Consider a doctor diagnosing a patient. If the person is taking a certain drug and you want to know the side effects, you can look that up. However, if a new patient comes to you with a mixture of symptoms, and you don't have medical knowledge in-head, you're no better than WebMD
