@alicemazzy getting into hunting is the best thing that's happening on my TL at the moment; it slightly beats the grusk affair IMO1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -
There is a straightforward path from Spengler to Hemingway in Ngorongoro. Few know this.

I have a very old copy of "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" and it is quite a book. Corbett is a very tangled character to modern eyes. He was a trophy hunter. He probably had more than a little White Man's Burden disease. 1/

On the other hand, he would sit up, alone, night after night in a miserable, stinking jungle, often within a short distance of rotting corpses, to try to kill extraordinarily dangerous animals because they were a threat to *other people.* 2/

Sorry if I'm threadjacking, but I think this really bears repeating. He went, alone, at night, into a jungle where *man-eating tigers and leopards* were hunting. And he just sat there and waited to see who found who first. Try to think of a modern person you think would do that.

To bring it back around, this is the kind of thing people who think hunting is about compensating for inadequate genitalia or indulging bloodlust can never understand. Admittedly, many prey animals aren't very dangerous. But not all hunting is one-sided.
