the unexamined relationship between that first claim (Thiel's non-conventional understanding of evolution) and the rest of the claims (the mimetic, evolutionary, and infectious nature of language and stories) is sticking out at me like a pimple that must be popped

eeeeeeeeew I can see it tbh "current narratives re: evolution are qualitatively wrong" vs " . . . quantitatively" wouldn't be toooo surprised if basic story of evolution is about right but the molecular / genetic / something else drivers are much weirder than we know right now

The basic expression of that idea is just to note that nucleic acids are not the only replicators that influence survival fitness. Some of those replicators don't even have distinct molecules associated with them. And yet they do replicate and mutate and are inherited.
