do we understand why there dont seem to be many wacky-ass serial killers anymore? seems like there were tons and tons in the 60s-80s but when was the last time we had a new serial killer? maybe its just bad impulse control everywhere and they just go spree killing instead idk

my theory is that 20th century was perfect storm for serial killers with rising anonymity & not rising fast enough forensics, now forensics threatens to catch anyone

that was one of my thoughts too, hard to get this shit through with DNA and pervasive surveillance not sure I buy the other forensics tech, mostly seems like bullshit to generate easy convictions :/

Yeah things like hair follicle analysis and bite mark analysis have proven to be comple crocks of pseudo science bullshit. Let's not even get into the legitimacy of polygraph testing. DNA analysis is one of the biggest real developments in physical forensics of the 20th century.

Their patterns are getting harder to trace, or more of them are operating on the interstates instead of fixed locations.

hmm, that seems plausible why would the patterns change tho? lot of them seemed like they really sought notoriety / publicity, others were stuck on particular notable methods

I don't know why patterns would change, other than understanding they need to be more careful with advancements in LEO tech. Adapt or die sort of thing.

I think we still have serial killers they're just not as obvious or visible. Society is ever more complex and with that complexity comes myriad ways to hide in plain sight and normalize otherwise abnormal behavioral tells. We just don't have comic book 60s Batman serial killers.

There is an ongoing case here in Toronto where a serial killer targeted gay men and hid their body parts in flower pots around the city. Arrested him this year, and a man was tied up in his house when the police broke down the door. Pretty wacky...

Good point. We need a startup to provide Murder-as-a-Service with a killer web front-end.

I’ve actually wondered the same. I do wonder if the glorification of serial killers (and yes, it was glorification) is now given as attention by media to killing spree attackers. There’s definitely a feedback loop of some kind between media attention and the actions of crazies.

Theories: They’ve all been reading true crime books and watching CSI and now we can’t find or even detect them. LEA don’t like the bad press when they can’t catch them so they don’t tell reporters about the patterns.

Or they're needed by powerful groups and thusly are allowed to kill in relative secrecy until they've finished serving a purpose or have angered someone powerful enough.

Considering they like to play on the helpless, I would think California’s homeless population would be ground zero for serial killers. And it might be, homeless people are hard to follow and keep track of.

Yeah my first thought was DNA testing. But also maybe the kill-ees getting savvier. Like Ted Bundy just asked ladies to help carry stuff to his car I bet that wouldn't work anymore

Everybody's got a camera in their pocket, regardless of whether or not they're happy to see you, and DNA evidence is still better than a lack thereof.
