We used to just call them spirits and be able to actually talk about it without feeling embarrassed and tripping over our words.

I mean, an egregore is explicitly a subclass of spirits even in its original coinage. Cordyceps is a genus of fungus, so in that case we ought to adopt an animist stance and talk about the Cordyceps anima.
