I think that a lot of people try to disprove that IQ matters, either by saying it doesn't measure g or saying g doesn't actually have a qualitative difference. I think the actual counter-argument is "yes, g does exist, but being very good at learning is not a foolproof strategy."

I mean, yeah, I'd probably rather play cardgames with the smartest stamp collector in the world than some "I am so smart because I got 4.0s in high school" jackass who doesn't even clear 1 StDev but thinks they're God's Gift To Mankind because they can do logic puzzles for money.

Countercountercounterargument: what if good/adaptive traits tend to cluster and high g people are just more likely to also have other good traits? If so it'd be like saying height predicts intelligence or vice versa because malnutrition tends to stunt both.
