that hmmm thats also a valid take

I legit don't think what I would have done with my life in any pre-internet era
-
I wouldn't have survived the stupid ages
-
the 1970s were like Vinge's Zones of Thought. We were in the Slow Zone, waiting for a quake to bring The Beyond to us ... and limping along on ion engines at 1 s/s towards the heights
-
I'm rather grateful for having frown up in the (barely) pre-internet era. Remembering how to navigate the paper world feels like arcane forgotten magic now. :)

What scares me is that I don't remember 'how things used to be', I skipped MySpace, so social media only happened about a decade ago for me, but I was still full-grown before Facebook. I don't remember the absence of connectivity, at all.
-
I remember it but it's . . . strange and hard to disentangle from just being young I think I got my start with CONNECTIVITY in Diablo 1 chatrooms but it hit hard with AIM
-
Come to think, AIM is when connectivity began to change my behavior. Prior to it the internet was just a well of content. Asynchronous commitment-free always-thereness...ugh. Too sober for this shit.

tentative agree, I like hyperconnectivity but a sort of degree of siloing would be nice, just for organizational purposes. but I would still be upset if we went back right now, because I am rewiring my brain to adapt to the current environs, would be annoying to do it again.
-
that said, before Social Media was Big Media, a channel you couldn't talk back to, only be subject to. And it wasn't really that different w/r/t quality, I think, a lot of golden memories but it was basically the way things are now except no voice for the underclass, just a boot.
-
Academic obscurantism, yellow journalism, dick-measuring contests over nukes, none of these things were invented yesterday, except Back Then I would already be in jail for the gay. Go back before Industry? What do you get? Hyperconnectivity that is also physical. The Village.
