on first blush, tho, it reads most like trafficking panic media in the US extremely lurid! unspeakable horrors! unbelievable scale! mass complicity! well usually when stories are unbelievably awful, the focus ought to be applied not to "awful" but to its modifying adverb

eg: it is just not true that in the US thousands of women sex slaves are dragged to the super bowl and sold to ravening fans. it doesnt happen. and yet! you can read this dreck Every Damn Year the only reliable outcome is pageviews and NGOs and cops getting fat on donations

go further and look at other moral panics. white slavery! black metal satanists! pedophile rings in nurseries! dungeons and dragons, for christ's sake! people get whipped up, send some poor people to prison, and stop paying attention for the inevitable judicial reversal

I'm not saying it's impossible; only that if I were a betting man I'd say p=0.7 it falls apart under scrutiny :/

Hadn't even realised it was about the UK, this really boosts your p-value because the UK has been in a complete moral panic meltdown about The Paedos for an entire generation
-
oh man still? i remember a panic in the late 90s maybe where someone like burned down a pediatrician's office because they misunderstood the professional title
-
yeah that basically never ended

yea but the rotherham one was legit so it seems plausible imo

If it's Reuters it maybe true, Reuters has a reputation in being unbiased and to the point factual like them very much
-
I think I fucked that up and wrote Reuters because (???), original piece was the Daily Mirror which is maybe bad (?)
-
i dont read daily mirror lol, reuters is what i read, their app is super handy and gets notifications just a minute behind bloombergs, which is pretty good too
