Generally, wouldn't it be relatively easy to avoid the latter? Also, I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on outlets avoiding the former with subscriptions and the like?

I think subscriptions do improve quality, although they don't entirely solve the problem because you get a certain amount of pandering instead. Journalism also suffers from a labor oversupply and collapsing business model =/ Advertising is bad enough when it's lucrative
