No shade to Elon, but I don't want a corporation being the first to set foot on Mars. I kinda want it to be the representatives of United Earth. (Darn you, science fiction writers!)

It would suck if, within the next 2-3 centuries, the solar system became carved up by competing capitalist or national interests. (Our dear Sol deserves better than that from us Terrans.)

And it's something that those of us who will never leave Earth should discuss, since our actions will set the norms for future generations. I get that some of my activist friends think space exploration is irresponsible. But we have to say plainly, "Space is for everyone."

Love all the novels & comics where the entire planet votes. (I think that in order to do certain things, maybe the majority of the species has to agree. We're nowhere near that kind of thinking yet, but by the 22nd century? Yes.)

Like, unless or until you get at least 5 billion humans to agree that you and your corporation/group/nation get to mine, say, a particular asteroid, then you don't get to do it. Because it's not just yours to take.
