it's like the popular kids, sure it's rigged but it's hard to see it as anything but the only game in town
-
but theres no single big society anymore subcultures atomization etc, vs systematicity who even are the popular kids now you know?
-
Groveling is instinctive, not reasoned. Also, strangers are arguably even scarier than people you know but among whom you're the Omega.
-
Maybe it's about collecting information. Online status wars are becoming more competitive, so it's more valuable to have intimate knowledge of your enemies. Plus a lot of the outgroup hatred between internet personalities just seems like it's performed for clicks.
-
no. because quiet observation would _still_ be more effective for gathering knowledge. i think it's the same impulse as talking a lot when you're nervous. learning to stay and listen before participating (particularly online) is maybe difficult?
-
it can be hard to know when is the right time to start speaking.

the problem isn't "trying to be friends" its that they do it by jumping right in instead of lurking for a very long time until they are equipped to engage
-
hmmmmmmmm I wasn't thinking of our recent bloodbath actually, not totally sure your diagnosis easily applies in my motivating example but I don't want to be crass and actually mention the object level case
-
if someone "actually wanted" to "be friends" they would quietly follow the people they find interesting, until picking up dynamics and being presented with a good opportunity to organically interact. how do you make friends?
-
this is what i do irl as well as online. when i jump the gun i feel that anyone that treats me poorly is justified.
-
I make friends by unapologetically forcing my way into their lives
-
hey guys what's going on
