charging in D&D should probably be less of a question of distance or straight lines and more of a question of whether or not someone is already on you who would interfere with you moving about so freely.

Isn't this already accounted for? Or have I been playing with a house rule this whole time and not known it?

the actual charging rules are mind-numbingly stupid and require you to draw a straight line into the charge and have absolutely no obstacles, so a cavalry charge is interrupted by one rabbit on the field en route to the archers you want to tell "hello go fuck yourself."

this varies based on edition, of course, in 5e charges don't even exist as a rules concept, but in the various iterations of 3e it was uhhh a thing. and there were TONS of feats to let you make even a single turn in a charge.

I do seem to remember that. I haven't played 5e. My group and I settled into Pathfinder comfortably and "homebrewed" what we needed to

Yeah you are almost certainly houseruling sensible late-edition 3.5 changes on top of Pathfinder, which often reverted them because 🤡

probably my best-designed mundane-class character in pathfinder was a halfling cavalier whose M wolf mount had feats to ignore difficult terrain

I remember fondly getting together with another player to play an over-the-top power pair in an already over-the-top campaign. He was a horse I was a knight can it get any more obvious? He had White Raven Tactics I had White Raven Tactics too do we have any more actions left?

That was low key one of my favorite supplement books.
