@0Kultra@eigenrobot@drethelin And if Eigen is alluding to the East India Company I think it’s a bit of an unfair comparison as they were closer to a state than a modern company; empowered to wage war, take prisoners, etc. -
>empowered to wage war, take prisoners, etc exactly! GOOG can't do any of that. hardly qualifies as "most powerful" to say nothing about various historical mercenary groups which could sack the Googleplex easily, even pre-gunpowder ones I mean vikings were basically for profit
-
I actually suspect vikings might have a bit of trouble sacking the googleplex. There's gonna be some ppl carrying firearms in there somewhere, 'cos 'murica.
-
Not enough to take out a complement of berserkers I bet Would they even stand their ground against wild northmen, blue with woad? I bet not
-
depends how many 'preppers work at google, I think.
-
Yeah my guess is there are probably at least a couple dozen guns on google campus
-
i bet at this point anyone who brings a gun to google would, given the chance, join the vikings

nah but they're working on conquering the seas with their barges
-
unarmed barges arent gonna take a city https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Indian_Navy_(1612%E2%80%931950)#East_India_Company …

"most powerful company that has ever existed" is silly historically-illiterate hyperbole, but tbh the analogy isn't a bad one, either

we won't really know if Google doesn't flex its muscles. it could be a fragile kind of power.

I really doubt it'd last long in a general environment crazy enough that it had to directly maintain most of its own data pipe for example
-
at least not without swallowing a major telecom carrier or two whole first, which wouldn't fly politically just for starters
-
yeah Google is in a position where it seems really powerful but it only has that power is a cog, it isn't ready to go conquer territories. Granted, that would give the programmers with too much time something to do.
-
on balance amazon is probably a lot closer to having real go-conquer-territories power than google is, tbh

crazy thing is a company like Google probably could do this if it's politics were Imperialist instead of SJW.
