This is interesting, as someone who's never played a game with loot boxes or anything like them. Hmm--I guess MTG qualifies, but the secondary market is robust enough for it not to matter or for it to feel fun rather than forced. This is a good article, and not just because I am extensively quoted. The reporter gets it. How the legal battle around loot boxes will change video games forever https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/19/16783136/loot-boxes-video-games-gambling-legal?utm_campaign=theverge&utm_content=entry&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter … via @Verge

The real fun comes with bans on gambling or heavy regulation thereof Gambling bans originated as antiblasphemy measures per _Religion and the Decline of Magic_, and like antiprostitution statutes somehow survived the withering of blue laws generally

Tbqh on reflection I don't see a compelling policy case for banning games with gambling. Woh dang your game requires massive repeat payments to play? And you don't enjoy this? There are other games my dude!

Part of the problem is that these games are marketed to minors. To me that's the biggest issue.

The other major issue is that the best argument for regulated gambling is that it makes the game transparent. The paytable is right there on the game when you play a slot machine. The same is not true of lootbox systems.

My daughter collects these: https://www.blindboxes.com/product/yummy-breakfast-keychain-series-blind-box/ … You will note that even with these, the paytable is on the box.

In my mind, it is a justifiable exercise of state regulatory power to say that if you're going to take people's money as a wager stake, you have to tell them the odds of winning.

Incidentally, if you were to set a Nevada slot machine to the kind of payout % of your average video game lootbox system, you would go to prison. Those things make bar-back eight-liners look honest.

HM I have a lot of feelings about laws restricting minors due to some commitments to Past Eigenrobot and I'm really mixed on that point, but mandating transparency seems like a no-brainer.
