Space rangers > Space marines. I will fucking die on this hill, hopefully supported by orbital strikes if the star gods see fit to support their champion on this godforsaken planet.

Space as a wild west metaphor makes more sense than space as an ocean. A colonized galaxy will be full of backwater planets with less developed technology, full of outlaws/lawmen who are only slightly different from each other.
-
Space navies don't make much sense when you consider that any ship capable of traveling between stars is also a weapon of mass destruction that doesn't have to listen to any planet based authority. Space pirates? yes. Privateers? probably. Organized navies? Unlikely.
-
Civilized planets will be defending by solar powered death lasers capable of destroying any invading force. Uncivilized planets will be at the mercy of space pirates unless they hire privateers. On the surface it will be marshals vs outlaws on any planet that isn't all droned up.

I'm not sure about the bird motif, but "Science Ninja" sounds like a good way to describe special forces, and the sentai team is probably the ultimate extension of powell doctrine. Highly trained specialists in powered armor supported by the most advanced robotic weapons possible

The only thing that sci-fi cartoons miss, is that in real life Rangers mostly train Tribal Militias to do the fighting for them, and that space rangers would probably do the same. Manpower comes from the locals you are supposed to be protecting.

Really in any era of warfare, the purpose of the hero is just to convince the rest of the soldiers to show up to the battle at the same time and make sure everyone fights in the right formation and doesn't just run away. The hardest part of any battle.
