Quarters were something like 90% silver through 1964 :(
-
Exactly 90%, to within reasonable tolerances. Dimes, too.
-
Pennies dated 1982 and earlier are 95% copper. After that they are zinc with a copper wash, basically.
-
Note that there *are* 1982 pennies made of zinc - the only way to be sure is to weigh them. 1981 and earlier are all copper.
-
However, all 1964 dated quarters and dimes are coin silver.
-
Half-dollars 64 and earlier are also coin silver: half-dollars 65-70 are 40% silver. After that half-dollars are clad as well.
-
Trivia: the coin silver blanks were not used up until 1966, but all coin-silver coins struck in 65 and 66 were dated 64.
