if you've got stats and programming skills you can usually make it to a (good) data science role solid salary at half the hours worked

unsure about hard science proper, for economics the bar at (say) amazon is quite low relative to academia as long as you get coding + data

I don't know academics really end up doing much research they actually enjoy :/
