I think what's weird about lots of contemporary political extremists is that they don't know, or act as if, they're weird fringe groups
heh I don't trust myself to make causal arguments anymore but I'd guess that's part of it also maybe hypermoralization of policy?

So much is optimized for performative outrage that I can't help but to think it's the default when not prevented.
