I'll be interested to see what France does. They've got a proximity to the region that we don't have, & their military is one of a few on the continent that could give Russia problems. And they've talked about defending Ukraine's territorial integrity.

What is scary is that the signs this past year have been there - fuel and medicine stockpiles, professional mechanized forces taking up positions previously held by conscripts, etc Unclear though what Russia would have to gain from this

The problem is politics - Ukraine's East-West tensions have declined lately and the breakaway republics are dead ends As for real military conquest, they could try but the forces they have on hand are sufficient to give a bloody nose in a limited engagement, not to hold ground

There are parallels with how the WWI was fixed in Versailles paving the way to WWII. Notably separating large German speaking population from Germany. You had large Russian populations removed from Russia at the dismantling of USSR.
