I don't think the ACLU's commitments require them to be uniformly opposed to all convictions; I don't think that actually makes sense. They advocate civil liberties, not a complete absence of any criminal prosecution whatsoever.

i agree with you in this very narrow sense. but it seems to me theyre disagreeing with the verdict not as a matter of how law was applied to the facts of the case but as a matter of broader social policy, eg how police were acting

seems like they object to what it "represents" rather than "what does law demand and what do civil rights protect in this specific courtroom" and i find that deeply objectionable from them specifically
