I actually agree with the criticism of the police *in the abstract* - that the police were deliberately negligent in their duty to protect people during the riots - and the rest of that detail is the "I disagree with the ACLU's characterization of the circumstances".

But like, if you spot them their view of the facts on the ground those nights, "the police should have spent more effort protecting protestors so that people would not be [for whatever reason] shooting at them" seems like an acceptable view IMO.
