There was a decade long warm up period to the civil war involving numerous incidents, disputes and skirmishes before fort sumter.

Decades, easily (though that last decade got real nasty) What seems different here is that there isn't a policy question to fight over as clear as "shall slavery be expanded", and the battlelines now are largely urban/rural, which ... how does that even work in civil conflicts
