i think you can slightly generalize fideism away from God in particular to characterize a stance that any particular body of beliefs is beyond critical examination

this sidesteps the tiresome and i think not useful arguments about whether woke shit constitutes a "religion" and avoids muddling the actual issue, which is that we've somehow reached the point where large swathes of the population may not criticize it without being ostracized

anyway someone who has his ear please let
@JohnHMcWhorter know about this option because im really tired of seeing people get into stupid fights about thisShow this thread -
further hansonian comment from follow up with charles who i want to be clear i was not trying to criticize in this thread fideism isnt "people Believe this" its more "your not allowed to seem to not believe it" which seems extremely different than Faithhttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1460226234193879043?t=7zJm4_wCbXhIuWaRQLtX2g&s=19 …

like you know. you think everyone in North Korea shouting praises to the Dear Leader feels overwhelming love for kim jong un in their hearts thats really not the point of it all. the point is to not be executed with a flamethrowerhttps://www.foxnews.com/world/north-korea-dictator-kim-jong-uns-executions-anti-aircraft-guns-flamethrowers-mortars …

i disagree with this a good way to distinguish most cases is that usually when someone really believes something deeply, another's nonbelief is a curiosity to them, rather than a threathttps://twitter.com/tjrwriting/status/1460229042985132032?t=LO-CfzPVocvVA12XZJjGtw&s=19 …

i think theres a case to be made for wokeism being a religion, tho i dont have a strong view on this what i object to specifically is the tendency to claim "its a religion" with the implication that this is ipso facto grounds for criticismhttps://twitter.com/JackMartensite/status/1460230982716563457?t=LO-CfzPVocvVA12XZJjGtw&s=19 …

im not sure how McWhorters book actually handles this. but to the extent that his critique boils down to "its bad because its a religion" one can imagine why people of other religions would be unwelcoming to the argument

Ongoing debate within evangelical Christianity about whether or not we've made Christianity into fideism and whether or not that is a bad thing
