partly i wanted to be an oracle in that thread so yes i exaggerate my certainty :) but i do think this is how things are likely to shake out regardless of what the demos want enclosure and industrialization ran roughshod over kings and peasants and i expect silicon will too

So you can't just pretend away a technological shift, and they interact with mutually reinforcing social, intellectual and economic forces that cannot be straightforwardly stopped or resisted.

But that's not the same thing as historical or technological determinism - contradictions can suddenly emerge between different forces, and groups and even individuals can transform the world, sometimes long after they've died.
