five years ago i set up a home veterinary checkup for Penelope. when the vet called to go over bloodwork etc he got very nervous when he mentioned her weight, emphasized that he wasnt trying to put Penelope down, was just worried about the potential for feline diabetes at her age

The pet wasn't fat shamed, whatever that is. The pet is probably pretty happy about the whole thing. The owner, however, *was* shamed for not properly looking out for their pet and they're torqued at being seen.

My dog is 14 and has a lot of hip arthritis. My vet emphasizes keeping her moving and keeping her as light as possible to reduce the strain and pain in her hip. It's bad enough to choose to treat yourself that way. Even worse to do it to an animal you're supposed to care for.

My vet has what should be a great strategy: they score your animal's weight on a scale of 1-8 every visit, with 4-5 as "good". In practice, they always score our shorthair dog as a 5 and the fluffy dog as a 6, even when their weight changes >20%.

Truth telling is good. Active shaming is bad. I find it telling that everyone has a SPECIFIC sort of shaming that they like. The thing like fatshaming. The chaste like slutshaming. Etc. Everyone loves the whip in their hand, hates the one on their back.
