I see it all the time with RS, less so with options. But if they have an obviously low strike price/ 409A value, then it can make sense to buy unvested stock.

oh yeah that applies off the top of your head incidentally. do you know whether one can stick options in a roth ira?

Hard to do. Would probably need to set up a self directed roth, and your company plan would have to allow for it.

I heard about a tax strategy where some guys formed an IC-DISC that bought their companies’s foreign receivables, and because the ICdisc was a s-corp owned by a Roth IRA they paid no income tax or cap gains.
