realizing that memory lookups on arrays are usually implemented by taking the first value's address and then adding sizeof()*index made the scales fall from my eyes. if you multiply by zero, it zeros out, so the offset ends up being the first value.

I like how in ADA & VHDL you can actually define array ranges as part of the type definition.
