eigenrobot added,
Imagine what such regular theft does to boost price increases, compounded by the low-level theft that hits stores all the time, whether via shoplifting or employees. Imagine how smoothly run & low-cost things could be without thieves.
if it was enough to substantially eat into profit margins, companies would hire adequate security. the fact that they haven't indicates the dollar amounts stolen are probably low enough that a cost/benefit analysis favors doing nothing
What I’m saying is, you can hire a security guard, but that won’t do anything (except intimidation) if the guard isn’t legally empowered to shoot at fleeing thugs
Intimidation and calling the cops would be a pretty powerful deterrent This seems to be a crime of opportunity—no one is watching the trains. Security guards would mostly eliminate that opportunity
What if there's dozens of people stealing at once? How does a single guard combat that? I don't think calling the cops really works here- considering this is near a train, there's probably a major roadway within a few minutes.
think a major issue is if the guard is in a position to use force, is the risk to self from assault and/or subsequent legal entanglement worth the $20/hr or whatever. and my guess is the answer is typically no
Forget which heist movie this is from (it’s not a well-known one): “if he wants to die for his 35k a year, let’s not get in his way.”
