why is market value important in valuing a stock you're not gonna buy the entire company it's just a cost of a bet that the price will go up feels like only important if you want to check likelihood of takeover

yea I may have just seen one too many "Tesla is worth all auto companies combined now" tweets just resonates loudly to me as a "so what" and I'm not a Tesla bull like yea sure ofc it does, people think it will go up, they don't actually think it is worth in totality that much

yeah i mean if everyone were to dump their shares at once it would surely not go for a trillion dollars or w/e marginal vs total value and all that plus some other stuff but is it more valuable than the old car companies combined. idk that doesnt seem crazy to me
