im fairly disappointed by people who generally identify as libertarian leaning yet support vaccine mandates and passports without explicitly grimacing about the implications for government power and considering the actually implementability of these policies

Libertarianism fails in practice. Big problems require big government. The best we can hope for is economic freedom, low taxes, and a government that operates efficiently.

Fun story from my old high school. Principal's a nice clueless Gen-X Italian Catholic. Off the cuff, she announced over the PA maybe it wouldn't hurt to dress more consevatively. You can guess what happened. Leader of the opposition is a hijab-wearing Muslim.

She fought like a lion using all the right language, and now she's secured the right for 14 year olds to wear garments we'd call string bikinis to class. The Libertarians should love that! Point is, she's still wearing her hijab and full covering. This was a very small problem.

The larger the government, the harder it is to determine how to determine promotions via meritocracy. Suddenly you can't have small problems. Everything must become a big problem. Especially the small problems. And especially especially when there are no problems.

And I have to assume you're a smart guy. So the question is, what's your angle? Because neo-Libertarianism could potentially still function if there was digital monitoring observing every movement for conformity to best practices. Invasive as a concept would cease to exist.

You computer guys scare the hell out of me. Just keep creating problems requiring solutions while hinting strongly at a telos offering no way back. Not you Eigen. And I don't see a way out of the mess we're in now. I woke up feeling so good and now that's gone again. Blah.

oh here im only specifically referring to the idea that large-scale solutions require centralized control. generally i think this is not true, very often they can be neatly resolved by distributed systems with an emergent coordination mechanism pic relatedpic.twitter.com/RxBLenfbEc

So where’s the country that managed to contain COVID as well as China using a distributed system with an emergent coordination mechanism?
