What Aella describes is true, but as a practicing doctor it’s also true that we don’t have the time or energy to do deep dives into the latest research on every single medical condition we may encounter. I tend to do it more if the official guidelines seem “off” to me…

hmmm. i kind of wonder about this actually. wouldn't you be better at caring for yourself? you've got great context starting out, and you could spend as much time reading up as you like i thought that rule was to stop you from just prescribing yourself fun drugs

I think you may be right if we are talking about the "rationalist-adjacent" population, i.e. people who are smart, Bayesian, have a basic understanding of human biology, etc...?

no i mean--I was specifically using "you" to mean "you, a doctor", wrt treating oneself that seems ideal, doctors already have a broad knowledge base, and time and incentive and ability to dive in and get even more local context

Yeah, I personally think it's quite reasonable for doctors to treat themselves for a lot of medical problems. This is not the mainstream opinion among doctors though. Issues can arise if a doctor gets too "emotionally invested", it can make it harder to remain "objective", etc..

wasn't there a study about doctors tending to prefer /less/ intensive treatments for eg cancers that were likely to be terminal?
