Once another doctor frowned when I described how an earlier doctor had treated me. Then he looked at the CDC website and was like "oh nvm the CDC updated its recommendation, you're fine." Did he even look at WHY it was updated? Did he AGREE with it? Ir-fucking-relevant.

yeah to be very clear im not complaining about doctors not being omnipotent person with a mostly-broad domain expertise but only 15m in the office vs a smart person with time on their hands a massive and fluid space of knowledge its a tricky questionhttps://twitter.com/Roflsaurus16/status/1451289817191378954?t=54mIZCJnNgSl-tOZY29P0A&s=19 …

What Aella describes is true, but as a practicing doctor it’s also true that we don’t have the time or energy to do deep dives into the latest research on every single medical condition we may encounter. I tend to do it more if the official guidelines seem “off” to me…

It's a great thread and it highlights an important point. The value that a medical opinion provides is not, despite what ALL parties involved think, judgment about what you should do. It is instead their experience and pattern recognition. Thats most of what medicine is

Your doctor doesn't have access to your preferences or how you would rate various risks and venefits and unless by chance they happen to have skill at it they won't be able or even interested in discerning them from you

Which traits does out current doctor-producing pipeline optimize for and why might those be orthogonal to producing quality medical practicioners?

I have usually found that doctors are pretty happy to discuss my Google self-diagnoses with me. I don't know if that's just the doctors I randomly happened to find, or whether I seem educated and calm and so they assume I'm not just being a hypochondriac.
