If your poor u can't buy nice things, so u don't. If your richer and want to show off u buy nice things so ppl see them and know you're not poor. If you're super rich you don't buy nice things so ppl know that you are not merely rich but super rich. Last one is countersignalling

i think the easiest example is zuckerburg wearing a hoodie to board meetings where everyone else is wearing a suit everyone knows who he is, he doesnt have to impress anyone by dressing nicely so hes flexing it but someone else wearing a hoodie might be confused with a prole

see I kinda think that's an asshole move which maybe is the point imo wearing a suit in appropriate contexts is about showing respect for other people

Silicon Valley specifically does not wear suits. Silicon Valley however *interfaces* with places that wear suits and whether or not you wear a suit doing that interfacing is very much that sort of move.

My tech employer requires me to dress nicely around our users because we specifically don’t want to look like we’re flexing on them and make them feel bad

once work travel picks back up I'll probably have to pick up 2 or 3 more suits

I would like to have it as a dress code but will never do it regularly otherwise.
