It's both

On some level, adults are desensitized and experience less intense feelings... And then there's another level of adulthood where you feel just as intensely as you did in childhood (maybe more so) but as an adult, keep it to yourself

kids get upset at small negative events because they haven't had large ones happen yet, so the small ones seem large when you're 2 years old dropping your ice cream in the sand might genuinely be the worst thing that's ever happened to you, so you'll react like it was

once you've felt something intense for long enough you probably deserve a break

Makes sense. A breadstick is like a wild flavor experience to my children. Actually dipping one in anything would make their heads explode.

I've thought this before myself. I miss the teenage days of feverish high drama.

I’m of the opposite opinion since even after middle age, I know I’m having the same emotions I did as a toddler or in middle school. When I woke up the morning of grandma’s funeral I felt like throwing a tantrum.

Not an “expert,” but I do have three sons age 3 and under. In my experiences with them, the strongest emotions and the worst tantrums happen when they don’t know how to explain why they are upset. The worst tantrums happen just before a spurt of language growth.
