Coleman stoves. They run in gasoline as well as the special fuel.

what kind of emergency? I have a spirit stove for camping which would do the job for a few weeks if necessary

(no idea what's likely to be easiest to get hold of in a supply-chain situation)

Propane is the best prepper fuel. It lasts for *decades* with no special care, and is safe to burn indoors with the right stove.

I have a year's worth of propane in a tank. Although propane is my central heating, I am getting a wood stove to reduce my dependency. I will have to do some forestry chores every year, but I enjoy it.

I'd rather have a generic fuel burner of something that I can then use on a cast iron skillet. They make them that will work on regular gasoline, same with Coleman lamps.

the yellow bottle of HEET is denatured alcohol—works both as a gas line de-icer for your car and also as a clean burning fuel... you can put it in a tin can, punch holes around the top and then set a pot over it, works really well and doesn't leave carbon deposits on your pots

but also second propane for its longevity and the ability to buy in bulk

If you're serious about this, make a biogas tank (search 15-20 years old blogs, Whole Earth Catalog etc.) Your household wastes won't make enough gas for heating, but probably enough for cooking, and the end product is as good as compost.
-
Stocked gas canisters run out. Biogas doesn't run out as long as you keep eating. And if you decide to keep poultry or livestock, it's even better, because you have to deal with their waste anyway.
