major weakness of reddit is that content is subscribed to by category rather than by user ends up the unit of identify on that site is on the subreddit level. ie users don't have personalities, only subreddits have personalities

Sure, but I don't automatically see what organising around users (Twitter) is better than organising around categories (Reddit) In fact the greater hierarchy in Reddit may actually improve information quality.
