weirdly had a similar experience (as undergrad), but this flowed into a jeremiad on IRB/research ethics being bs everyone was avid partisans in rejecting IRB authority by like the 3rd week

at risk of opsec, this was the same professor that got backlash for asking why gay people smoked more

It seems like more men being gay and bisexual basically meaning “low conscientiousness” for women is doing a lot of the work there.

his pitch was unlikeliness to have or want kids changed the payoff for longevity in the longevity/fun tradeoff was definitely a “it’s bad on purpose to make you look.” (It worked)

That's a really optimistic and rational view of human nature. So I sort of immediately assume it's totally wrong

I think there is a chance more women think smoking is gross, there for some straight men don't smoke because of women, might be a plausible answer though too.

I think what makes it work pedagogically is that the question is framed to make you apply micro to an unusual area, maybe then to reach a different type of student It’s a contradictory style of assuming debate to find the Truth, but not particularly caring for the Final Verdict

idk my dude you engaged with the premise naturally and lucidly despite disagreeing with the framing—people not being able to do that is what filtered them out (IME)
