one thing i will always be grateful to rationalism (among other groups) for is that regardless of the extent to which i agree with them about various things they took "how to think clearly" to be a core and vital challenge and it was a joy to partake in that learninghttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1442435972470169606 …

ok it feels related but different or maybe just a subset of possible modes also not to do this AGAIN but perhaps kegan 3: coupling kegan 4: decoupling kegan 5: recoupling https://www.reddit.com/r/slatestarcodex/comments/8fnch2/high_decouplers_and_low_decouplers/ …

EA, HPMOR, AI risk, group houses, polyamory, gimmicky bayesianism, all that was later. maybe theres an extent to which that took up oxygen from the really useful development of a lexicon and culture of trying to think about things better that felt like the core of things to me

I guess the core question is though, with all those attempts to think better, did they ACTUALLY think better? I'm not 100% convinced they did.

FWIW I think there is some interesting research coming out of AI risk wing and whacky bayesian wing, tho I believe that the "whacky bayesians" don't have full courage of their convictions and aren't really trying to pluck the good, interesting low hanging fruit of their views>

EA IMHO also does a lot of good and has a lot of good arguments despite the overly prevalent yuddite AI concern infestation

Yud started LW specifically because he thought people weren't rational enough to be convinced that AI risk was real and important.

Once upon a time, Reddit was a place where upvotes and downvotes taught you how to make better arguments. They sure as hell nipped that one in the bud.

I’m confused by the chronology (again). I thought AI risk came first, and the rationality movement spun out from it. EA may have developed around the same time on a parallel track that later merged with the core AI rats? I dunno. I need a postrat to draw me a timeline.

I think Yudkowsky says he wrote the sequences with the specific intent of arguing why AI risk mattered and was hard. But I don't know that Robin Hanson was ever particularly motivated by that. So some, but not all, early proponents cared a lot about ai risk?
