I don’t talk to a lot of DS who are like pure analysts. The only ones I talk to are people writing a lot of code for ML frameworks or something. I think they call these MLE? They’re software engineers who specialize in numerical code

there's absolutely no downside to grinding stats and seeing what's out there. worst case, you're happier with where you're at for the time being and better prepared for when an opportunity does come along.
