Valentin @wannabegronchoReplying to @eigenrobotthis cool documentary (19:00) mentions a theory to explain why sumerian language was so different than it's sorrounding languages, bc they came escaping from a flood caused by the end of the glacial period that caused the persian gulf. Timur Kuran @timurkuranAll we know about human prehistory needs major revisions. The oldest known temple was recently uncovered at Göbeklitepe, SE Turkey. Nearby, at Karahantepe, an even older settlement is being excavated. It’s about 12,500 years old. It has obelisks but no pottery. It’s more or less purely a thought experiment, but the much larger areas of land could have been the origins of homo floriensis et al. Also, for an interesting insight into cultural sophistication w/o lasting monuments, see Novgorod wooden records/letters.

It’s possible that “disposable” but highly sophisticated cultures have risen and fallen globally without leaving any major detectable traces, or traces that get lumped in with earlier/less complex periods.

For another example, look at the (orthodox AND unorthodox) revisions of South America’s pre-Colombian “story” as more and more large-scale agricultural societies emerge from what environuts insist was always the “virginal” and unsullied Amazon expanse.
