the gist of it is, okay so you sort of imagine that everyone's got this kind of Bayesian prior over the entire world-system [just run with me here]. if you ask about a hypothetical that's sufficiently unusual, you're taking a bunch of conditional probabilities from the tail.

but for various reasons 1) we have invested a lot less time and energy in our prior at the tails and even more important 2) the results are hypersensitive to the precise understanding of what's being conditioned on
