Turns out this latitude assumption doesn’t really hold when you look at the different climates between Europe & North America. You have to take into account wind+ocean currents, etc. Same latitudes show quite different empirical data

The thing I find absolutely bizarre though is that the AAP recommendations for my kids are exactly the same as they were for me, even though my kids' skins is dark, and I'm an extremely melanoma-prone seethrough-white skin redhead.
