note: it might help to understand that while i'm trying to logic this out, i'm comparing ingroup to other types of collections of people-- music scenes, nations, etc. so if something doesnt make sense maybe replace "ingroup" with "the punk scene" or "Japan"

peeve #1: "labels bad" labels *inevitable* we're pattern-matching machines. if we dont "put ourselves into a box" on purpose, we'll put ourselves into a less accurate box without even being aware of it

peeve #2: "ingroup label in particular bad" "ingroup label" is self-aware and about as close as we can get to a label with some flexibility and humility i think there's also an anti-exclusionary factor built in

disclaimer: i have no objection to TCOT, Cozy Twitter, etc as labels but along with Ingroup Twitter, these are all subsets of Ingroup

what it *feels like* is happening is that people with these complaints are either already feeling excluded or fearing possible exclusion, or that they have beef with a particular person, but i havent seen threads on people reflecting on their personal stake

peeve #3: "ingroup too exclusionary" this one is purely imaginary, unless you're talking about individual cliques within ingroup, in which case pls make your complaints more specific literally all you have to do to join "ingroup" is show up and be nice. sometimes not even that.

Not picking on anyone specific, but I think sometimes what's going on here is that someone's inchoate felt sense of "I'm not as popular and I don't have as many followers as the well known names", is expressed as "Ingroup is exclusionary".

The dynamics of twitter are super weird. Like, when you say the word "Ingroup" it brings to mind this cute little community where everyone can know everyone, but realistically that's just not the case.
