doesnt seem like it matters nearly as much if people are talking about how bad things really are if theres no way to spread it at high velocity through major social media platforms

Big corporations have already been doing it under the guise of protecting users from viruses and malicious code. Google, Apple, Microsoft, all have ongoing efforts to wall the garden around running arbitrary code.

When using MacOS on work computers, I regularly had to Google how to defeat the new limitations with each update, just to be able to do my programming job on it. People have very seriously proposed having all programming require a license from the state.
