i think it ultimately fails as a joke because if you want to pretend your bad at science without actually conveying your bad at science it seems like what you do is structure an experiment around a glaring semitechnical flaw and ignore it not just "haha i cant arithmetic"

the humor comes from the fact that you wouldnt be able to design a specifically awful experiment without knowing how to avoid making the awful experiment and your audience has to hold the discrepancy between your stated claim and implicit competence superimposed funny!
