Also nothing strange about recognizing you don't have all the answers and remaining agnostic. "But that favors the status quo," isn't really an argument, especially in a world where status quo on ethical matters is rapidly evolving even as we speak.

There's 2 sides to it. Neutrality over something you haven't studied sufficiently to understand/care about is virtuous. Neutrality over something with a pretty clear right answer to avoid upsetting people can be strategically wise but is cowardly.

neutrality over something because you dont think its worth even spending the time to estimate what a right answer is or because you think the question is poorly framed or because you look at everyone who does care about it and think to yourself "naw"

Perhaps he is agreeing with you? Rather than say you're neutral, just admit you don't care enough, which would probably be healthier for everybody.
